The story for the people

Light Shining Out of Darkness

Even though William Cowper wrote these words in 18th century England, they still hold true today, in 21st century America, and will continue to hold true whenever and wherever people live. We need only look around us to see things we don’t understand, but know that God is working through them to His plan, and His will. There’s a new version of this that we just started singing in our church, and it adds a chorus that is very appropriate. “And I will trust and I will not be afraid for all His ways are love”. So many people have had to say that – just read the accounts of any person acting in the story unfolded in God’s word. From Abraham, to Joshua, to Ruth, to Habakkuk, to the disciples, to Paul. They all had to trust God’s will, His mercy, His grace, His purposes. Trust, don’t be afraid. God is not reckless!

God moves in a mysterious way
His wonders to perform;
He plants his footsteps in the sea,
And rides upon the storm.

Deep in unfathomable mines
Of never-failing skill,
He treasures up his bright designs,
And works his sovereign will.

Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take;
The clouds ye so much dread
Are big with mercy, and shall break
In blessings on your head.

Judge not the Lord by feeble sense,
But trust him for his grace;
Behind a frowning providence
He hides a smiling face.

His purposes will ripen fast,
Unfolding every hour;
The bud may have a bitter taste,
But sweet will be the flower.

Blind unbelief is sure to err,
And scan his work in vain;
God is his own interpreter,
And he will make it plain.
