Selfless, not self-centered

Studying in the book of Philippians we see the antithesis of a supremacy philosophy, unless it is specifically the supremacy of Christ.

Paul said this in his letter

“Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” Philippians 2:3-4

and follows with this example

“Christ Jesus, who … humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” Philippians 2:5-8

which had this result

“Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Philippians 2:9-11

I was brought back to this again as I studied for small group tonight, looking specifically at Paul’s plea in Philippians 4 to two believers to end their strife. It’s time to stop looking only at my own interests and to make sure they are in line with what is best for others. Whatever I do, it needs to bring honor and glory to God the Father. If that is not my motive, my means, and the outcome, Father forgive me.
