On being wise

… the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men. For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards,  not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth.  But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are,  so that no human being might boast in the presence of God.  And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, so that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”
… let no one boast in men, for all things are yours, whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future – all are yours, and you are Christ’s, and Christ is God’s.
1 Corinthians 1:25-30, 3:21-23 ESV

Stuart Townend put that thought to music in 1995 in his hymn “How Deep the Father’s Love for Us

I will not boast in anything,
No gifts, no power, no wisdom.
But I will boast in Jesus Christ
His death and resurrection.
Why should I gain from His reward?
I cannot give an answer,
But this I know with all my heart:
His wounds have paid my ransom.

And Steve and Vicki Cook followed up on that thought a few years later with their song “I Will Glory In My Redeemer“.

I will glory in my Redeemer,
Whose priceless blood has ransomed me.
Mine was the sin that drove the bitter nails,
And hung Him on that judgment tree.
I will glory in my Redeemer,
Who crushed the power of sin and death.
My only Savior before the holy Judge:
The Lamb Who is my righteousness,
The Lamb Who is my righteousness.
