{"id":819,"date":"2011-07-24T14:34:17","date_gmt":"2011-07-24T18:34:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jdackerman.com\/miscellany\/?p=819"},"modified":"2011-07-24T14:34:17","modified_gmt":"2011-07-24T18:34:17","slug":"from-the-psalms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jdackerman.com\/miscellany\/2011\/07\/24\/from-the-psalms\/","title":{"rendered":"From the Psalms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today&#8217;s reading, \u00a0Psalms 87-89, brought to mind two songs, one a hymn by John Newton in 1779 and the other a chorus from my youth that is still sung today (occasionally). I really love reading the scriptures and having songs I&#8217;ve sung jump off the pages at me as these two did today.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Glorious Things of Thee are Spoken&#8221; was written by Newton in 1779 and the title and first phrases come pretty much straight from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Psalm%2087&amp;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\">Psalm 87:3<\/a> &#8220;Glorious things of you are spoken,\u00a0O\u00a0city of God.&#8221; The rest of the hymn draws from other scripture text.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Glorious things of thee are spoken, Zion, city of our God;<br \/>\nHe whose word cannot be broken formed thee for His own abode;<br \/>\non the Rock of Ages founded, what can shake thy sure repose?<br \/>\nWith salvation&#8217;s walls surrounded, thou may&#8217;st smile at all thy foes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">See! the streams of living waters, springing from eternal love,<br \/>\nwell supply thy sons and daughters and all fear of want remove.<br \/>\nWho can faint while such a river ever floes their thirst to assuage?<br \/>\nGrace, which, like the Lord, the giver, never fails from age to age.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Round each habitation hov&#8217;ring, see the cloud and fire appear<br \/>\nfor a glory and a covering, showing that the Lord is near.<br \/>\nThus deriving from their banner, light by night, and shade by day,<br \/>\nsafe they feed upon the manna which he gives them when they pray.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u00a0Blest inhabitants of Zion, washed in the Redeemer&#8217;s blood!<br \/>\nJesus, whom their souls rely on, makes them kings and priests to God.<br \/>\n&#8216;Tis his love his people raises over self to reign as kings:<br \/>\nand as priests, his solemn praises each for a thank offering brings.<\/p>\n<p>The second, from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Psalm%2089&amp;version=KJV\" target=\"_blank\">Psalm 89<\/a>, is &#8220;I Will Sing of the Mercies of the Lord&#8221; written by James Fillmore in the early 20th century and reached popularity in the 1960s.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">I will sing of the mercies of the LORD forever,<br \/>\nI will sing, I will sing.<br \/>\nI will sing of the mercies of the LORD forever,<br \/>\nI will sing the mercies of the LORD.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">With my mouth will I make known<br \/>\nyour faithfulness your faithfulness;<br \/>\nWith my mouth will I make known<br \/>\nyour faithfulness to all generations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">I will sing of the mercies of the LORD forever,<br \/>\nI will sing of the mercies of the LORD.<\/p>\n<p>How about you? \u00a0How often do the songs you sing come to light when you read the Bible?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today&#8217;s reading, \u00a0Psalms 87-89, brought to mind two songs, one a hymn by John Newton in 1779 and the other a chorus from my youth that is still sung today (occasionally).
