{"id":598,"date":"2011-02-19T16:32:02","date_gmt":"2011-02-19T21:32:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jdackerman.com\/miscellany\/?p=598"},"modified":"2011-02-19T16:32:02","modified_gmt":"2011-02-19T21:32:02","slug":"help-my-unbelief","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jdackerman.com\/miscellany\/2011\/02\/19\/help-my-unbelief\/","title":{"rendered":"Help My Unbelief"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I got a new book in the mail today, &#8220;The Hymns of Philip Doddridge&#8221;, which contains over 300 hymns written in the early to\u00a0 mid-18th century (Doddridge was born in 1702 and died in 1751).\u00a0 As I paged through it this morning I found this hymn which ties in to my previous post.\u00a0 It turns out it is also in another hymnal I have, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.graceandtruthbooks.com\/product\/our-own-hymn-book-spurgeons-metropolitan-tabernacle-hymn-book\" target=\"_blank\">Our Own Hymn-Book<\/a>&#8220;, compiled by C. H. Spurgeon for use in his church in the late 19th century.\u00a0 The scripture text from which it is taken is Mark 9:24<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Jesus, our soul&#8217;s delightful choice,<br \/>\nIn Thee believing we rejoice;<br \/>\nYet still our joy is mix&#8217;d with grief,<br \/>\nWhile faith contends with unbelief.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Thy promises our hearts revive,<br \/>\nAnd keep our fainting hopes alive;<br \/>\nBut guilt, and fears, and sorrows rise,<br \/>\nAnd hide the promise from our eyes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">O let not sin and Satan boast,<br \/>\nWhile saints lie mourning in the dust;<br \/>\nNor see that faith to ruin brought,<br \/>\nWhich Thy own gracious hand hath wrought.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Do Thou the dying spark inflame;<br \/>\nReveal the glories of Thy name;<br \/>\nAnd put all anxious doubts to flight,<br \/>\nAs shades dispers&#8217;d by op&#8217;ning light.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">From &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.graceandtruthbooks.com\/product\/the-hymns-of-philip-doddridge\" target=\"_blank\">THE HYMNS OF PHILIP DODDRIDGE<\/a>&#8220;,\u00a0 #197<br \/>\nCompiled and Edited by Graham C.
