{"id":4214,"date":"2016-05-27T08:12:43","date_gmt":"2016-05-27T12:12:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jdackerman.com\/miscellany\/?p=4214"},"modified":"2016-05-27T23:53:29","modified_gmt":"2016-05-28T03:53:29","slug":"a-colloquy-on-rejoicing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jdackerman.com\/miscellany\/2016\/05\/27\/a-colloquy-on-rejoicing\/","title":{"rendered":"A Colloquy on Rejoicing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Translated from the Valley of Vision<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Remember, O my soul,<br \/>\nIt is your duty and privilege to rejoice in God:<br \/>\nHe requires it of you for all his favors of grace.<br \/>\nRejoice then in the giver and his goodness,<br \/>\nBe happy in him, O my heart, and in nothing but God,<br \/>\n&nbsp; for whatever a man trusts in,<br \/>\n&nbsp; from that he expects happiness.<\/p>\n<p>He who is the ground of your faith<br \/>\n&nbsp; should be the substance of your joy.<br \/>\nFrom where then comes heaviness and dejection,<br \/>\n&nbsp; when joy is sown in you,<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; promised by the Father,<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; bestowed by the Son,<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; inwrought by the Holy Spirit,<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; yours by grace,<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; your birthright in believing?<\/p>\n<p>Are you seeking to rejoice in yourself<br \/>\n&nbsp; from an evil motive of pride and self-reputation?<br \/>\nYou have nothing of your own but sin,<br \/>\n&nbsp; nothing to move God to be gracious<br \/>\n&nbsp; or to continue His grace towards you.<br \/>\nIf you forget this you will lose your joy.<br \/>\nAre you grieving under a sense of indwelling sin?<br \/>\nLet godly sorrow work repentance,<br \/>\n&nbsp; as the true spirit which the Lord blesses,<br \/>\n&nbsp; and which creates fullest joy;<br \/>\nSorrow for self opens rejoicing in God,<br \/>\nSelf-loathing draws down divine delights.<br \/>\nHave you sought joys in some creature comfort?<br \/>\nLook not below God for happiness;<br \/>\n&nbsp; fall not asleep in Delilah&#8217;s lap.<br \/>\nLet God be all in all to you,<br \/>\n&nbsp; and joy in the fountain that is always full.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Translated from the Valley of Vision Remember, O my soul, It is your duty and privilege to rejoice in God: He requires it of you for all his favors of grace.
