It all started with Martin Luther and his 95 Theses, which he was hoping would simply end the practice of the\u00a0Pope selling indulgences to raise money. They led to much more than that, though.\u00a0From that start came the &#8220;five Solas&#8221; which\u00a0contradict\u00a0the teaching of the Catholic Church:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cSola Scriptura\u201d (Scripture Alone)<br \/>\n\u201cSola Gratia\u201d (Grace Alone)<br \/>\n\u201cSola Fide\u201d (Faith Alone)<br \/>\n\u201cSolus Christus\u201d (Christ Alone)<br \/>\n\u201cSoli Deo Gloria\u201d (To God Alone Be Glory)<\/p>\n<p>If you want to read a bit more, you can go <a href=\"http:\/\/www.monergism.com\/thethreshold\/articles\/onsite\/qna\/fivesolas.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>\u00a0(monergism.com) as a starting point, and follow some of their links for even more information.<\/p>\n<p>Horatius Bonar, a Scottish pastor and hymn writer in the 19th century, wrote this\u00a0great song many years ago, published in 1861, which focuses on the work of Christ alone in the second verse, God&#8217;s grace alone in the third, faith alone in the works of Christ on the cross in verse four,\u00a0and gives glory to God alone in the fifth. It dispels any thought that we can do anything at all to affect our salvation.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Not what my hands have done<br \/>\nCan save my guilty soul;<br \/>\nNot what my toiling flesh has borne<br \/>\nCan make my spirit whole.<br \/>\nNot what I feel or do<br \/>\nCan give me peace with God;<br \/>\nNot all my prayers and sighs and tears<br \/>\nCan bear my awful load.<\/p>\n<p>Thy work alone, O Christ,<br \/>\nCan ease this weight of sin<br \/>\nThy blood alone O Lamb of God,<br \/>\nCan give me peace within.<br \/>\nThy love to me O God,<br \/>\nNot mine, O Lord, to Thee<br \/>\nCan rid me of this dark unrest,<br \/>\nAnd set my spirit free!<\/p>\n<p>Thy grace alone, O God,<br \/>\nTo me can pardon speak;<br \/>\nThy power alone O Son of God,<br \/>\nCan this sore bondage break.<br \/>\nNo other work, save Thine,<br \/>\nNo other blood will do,<br \/>\nNo strength save that\u00a0which is divine,<br \/>\nCan bear me safely through.<\/p>\n<p>I bless the Christ of God;<br \/>\nI rest on love divine;<br \/>\nAnd with unfaltering lip and heart,<br \/>\nI call this Savior mine.<br \/>\nHis cross dispels each doubt,<br \/>\nI bury in His tomb<br \/>\nEach thought of\u00a0unbelief and\u00a0fear,<br \/>\nEach lingering shade of gloom.<\/p>\n<p>I praise the God of grace,<br \/>\nI trust His truth and might<br \/>\nHe calls me His, I call Him mine,<br \/>\nMy God, my joy, my light<br \/>\n&#8216;Tis He Who saveth me,<br \/>\nAnd freely pardon gives<br \/>\nI love because He loveth me,<br \/>\nI live because He lives!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today is Reformation Day, when many Christians celebrate the beginning of the Reformation.
