Sunday is coming, and it is not just another day.\u00a0 Sunday is a great day for our family, a day we gather with other believers and corporately worship the God of our salvation.\u00a0 We do not always do it together, since we live in different towns.\u00a0 We do not always worship the same way, because the styles vary from church to church.\u00a0 The one commonality is in the God we worship, the “immortal, invisible, God only wise”.<\/p>\n
Here is my prayer for Sunday, taken from the Valley of Vision, a Collection of Puritan Prayers & Devotions, published by The Banner of Truth Trust.\u00a0 It’s titled “The Lord’s Day”.<\/p>\n
O Lord my Lord,<\/p>\n
This is Thy day,
\nthe heavenly ordinance of rest,
\nthe open door of worship,
\nthe record of Jesus’ resurrection,
\nthe seal of the sabbath to come,
\nthe day when saints militant and triumphant unite in endless song.<\/p>\n
I bless Thee for the throne of grace,
\nthat here free favor reigns;
\nthat open access to it is through the blood of Jesus;
\nthat the veil is torn aside and I can enter the holiest
\nand find Thee ready to hear,
\nwaiting to be gracious,
\ninviting me to pour out my needs,
\nencouraging my desires,
\npromising to give more than I ask or think.<\/p>\n
But while I bless Thee, shame and confusion are mine:
\nI remember my past misuse of sacred things,
\nmy irreverent worship,
\nmy base ingratitude,
\nmy cold, dull praise.<\/p>\n
Sprinkle all my past sabbaths with the cleansing blood of Jesus,
\nand may this day witness deep improvement in me.<\/p>\n
Give me in rich abundance
\nthe blessings the Lord’s Day was designed to impart;
\nMay my heart be fast bound against worldly thoughts or cares;
\nFlood my mind with peace beyond understanding
\nmay my meditations be sweet,
\nmy acts of worship life, liberty, joy,
\nmy drink the streams that flow from Thy throne,
\nmy food the precious Word,
\nmy defence the shield of faith,
\nand my heart be more knit to Jesus.<\/p>\n
