This is what you are to say to the Israelites: \u2018I AM has sent me to you.\u2019\u201d God also said to Moses, \u201cSay to the Israelites, \u2018<b><i>(YHWH)<\/i><\/b>, the <i>(Elohim)<\/i> of your fathers \u2014 the <i>(Elohim)<\/i> of Abraham, the <i>(Elohim)<\/i> of Isaac and the <i>(Elohim)<\/i> of Jacob \u2014 has sent me to you.\u2019 This is my name forever, the name by which I am to be remembered from generation to generation.<\/p>\n<h2>I AM WHO I AM<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jdackerman.com\/miscellany\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Popeye.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1241 alignright\" alt=\"Popeye - I yam what I yam\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jdackerman.com\/miscellany\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Popeye.jpg?resize=142%2C136&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"142\" height=\"136\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jdackerman.com\/miscellany\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Popeye.jpg?w=295&amp;ssl=1 295w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jdackerman.com\/miscellany\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Popeye.jpg?resize=150%2C144&amp;ssl=1 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 142px) 100vw, 142px\" \/><\/a>I grew up on Saturday morning cartoons. One of my favorites was Popeye, the Sailor Man. One of Popeye\u2019s recurring phrases was \u201cI yam what I yam, and that\u2019s all that I yam\u201d. As a kid when studying the story of Moses and the burning bush, I drew the pretty awkward parallel of Popeye to Moses\u2019 story in Exodus, and God\u2019s declaration to him :\u201dI AM WHO I AM\u201d. The unsaid but implied conclusion to that statement is \u201cand I AM ALL THAT YOU NEED\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2>Derivations<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>YHWH: from the Hebrew word \u201chavah\u201d, meaning \u201cto be\u201d or \u201cbeing\u201d. Closely associated with the Hebrew word \u201cchavah\u201d, meaning \u201cto live\u201d or \u201clife\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>YHWH IS<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Singular <i>(Exodus 3:15a)<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">THE God (Elohim) of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">\u201cIn the name Jehovah the personality of the Supreme is distinctly expressed. It is everywhere a proper name denoting the person of God, and Him only \u2026 Elohim \u2026 denoting usually \u2026 the Supreme. The Hebrew may say <i>the<\/i> Elohim, the true God, in opposition to all false gods; but he never says <i>the<\/i> Jehovah, for Jehovah is the name of the true God only. He says again and again, my God or my Elohim, but never <i>my Jehovah<\/i>, for when he says my God he means Jehovah. He speaks of <i>the God<\/i> <i>(Elohim) of Israel<\/i> but never of <i>the Jehovah of Israel<\/i>, for there is no other Jehovah. That is not true. True, Muslims worship &#8220;the God of Abraham&#8221;, but not the &#8220;God of Isaac and the God of Jacob&#8221;, and the Jews worship the &#8220;God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob&#8221;, but don&#8217;t worship Jesus.
