This hymn, written in 1709, was published in &#8220;Gadsby&#8217;s Hymns, C H Spurgeon&#8217;s &#8220;Our Own Hymn-Book&#8221; and &#8220;The Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts&#8221;. Watts apparently didn&#8217;t title his hymns, but the subtitle above was in both hymnals. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esvbible.org\/search\/1+Timothy+3%3A16%2C+John+1%3A1%2C+john+1%3A3%2C+john+1%3A14%2C+Colossians+1%3A16\/\" target=\"_blank\">Scripture <\/a>basis for the text is John 1:1, 3 and 14, Colossians 1:16 and 1 Timothy 3:16.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Ere the blue heavens were stretch&#8217;d abroad,<br \/>\nFrom everlasting was the Word:<br \/>\nWith God He was: the Word was God,<br \/>\nAnd must divinely be adored.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">By His own power were all things made;<br \/>\nBy Him supported all things stand;<br \/>\nHe is the whole creation&#8217;s head,<br \/>\nAnd angels fly at His command.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Ere sin was born, or Satan fell,<br \/>\nHe led the host of morning stars;<br \/>\n(Thy generation who can tell,<br \/>\nOr count the number of Thy years?)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">But lo! He leaves those heavenly forms,<br \/>\nThe Word descends and dwells in clay,<br \/>\nThat He may hold converse with worms,<br \/>\nDress&#8217;d in such feeble flesh as they.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Mortals with joy beheld His face.<br \/>\nTh&#8217; eternal Father&#8217;s only Son;<br \/>\nHow full of truth! How full of grace!<br \/>\nWhen through His eyes the Godhead shone!<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Archangels* leave their high abode<br \/>\nTo learn new mysteries here, and tell<br \/>\nThe love of our descending God,<br \/>\nThe glories of Immanuel.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>*Gadsby uses &#8220;Bless&#8217;d angels&#8221; while the other two use Archangels.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>You can sing this to many different tunes, such as &#8220;Old Hundredth&#8221; (the Doxology) , &#8220;Jesus Shall Reign&#8221;,\u00a0 &#8220;O Master, Let Me Walk With Thee&#8221; or even &#8220;I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day&#8221;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Isaac Watts was one of the great hymn writers of the church.
