Isaac Watts was one of the great hymn writers of the church. This hymn, written in 1709, was published in “Gadsby’s Hymns, C H Spurgeon’s “Our Own Hymn-Book” and “The Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts”. Watts apparently didn’t title his hymns, but the subtitle above was in both hymnals. The Scripture <\/a>basis for the text is John 1:1, 3 and 14, Colossians 1:16 and 1 Timothy 3:16.<\/p>\n

Ere the blue heavens were stretch’d abroad,
\nFrom everlasting was the Word:
\nWith God He was: the Word was God,
\nAnd must divinely be adored.<\/p>\n

By His own power were all things made;
\nBy Him supported all things stand;
\nHe is the whole creation’s head,
\nAnd angels fly at His command.<\/p>\n

Ere sin was born, or Satan fell,
\nHe led the host of morning stars;
\n(Thy generation who can tell,
\nOr count the number of Thy years?)<\/p>\n

But lo! He leaves those heavenly forms,
\nThe Word descends and dwells in clay,
\nThat He may hold converse with worms,
\nDress’d in such feeble flesh as they.<\/p>\n

Mortals with joy beheld His face.
\nTh’ eternal Father’s only Son;
\nHow full of truth! How full of grace!
\nWhen through His eyes the Godhead shone!<\/p>\n

Archangels* leave their high abode
\nTo learn new mysteries here, and tell
\nThe love of our descending God,
\nThe glories of Immanuel.<\/p>\n

*Gadsby uses “Bless’d angels” while the other two use Archangels.<\/em><\/p>\n
