Great is Thy Faithfulness

We sang this great hymn to close the service at church yesterday. Every time I sing it I get a catch in my throat as I think of just how true the words are, as I reflect on God’s mercies in my life, which are indeed new every morning, as Jeremiah said in Lamentations 3.

But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope:

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.
“The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.”

As I looked around the church at the others singing, I was able to reflect on how God has shown His mercy in their lives as well, and I could see from their faces that they were going through the same reflections.

That’s the beauty of a great hymn, sung together as a congregation, with every voice and every heart lifted to God in praise and worship. May we never stop singing! Indeed, how can I keep from singing?
