Julius Homer Ackerman 1924-2018

Julius Homer Ackerman woke up in heaven on Saturday, November 3, 2018. Julius, born in Muskegon in 1924 to Clare and Pearl (Curry) Ackerman, lived in the Muskegon and Fruitport area most of his life, spending the last three years in Cheboygan. He served in World War II from 1943 – 1946 in the South Pacific arena, primarily in New Guinea.

After his discharge in 1946, Julius met and fell in love with Arlene White of Fruitport at Curve Crest Roller Rink in Muskegon. They were married in 1947, and settled in Fruitport, raised their family and lived there for the next 65 years. Julius moved to Cheboygan in 2015, following the death of his daughter, Julie.

He was a sheet metal worker/spot welder by trade, working most of his career at Bastian-Blessing in Grand Haven, MI. He loved to work around the house and tinker, and loved to play pool with anyone who would stop by. His greatest love, however, was for his Savior, with whom he is now spending eternity. He worshipped and served God for many years, in many capacities, at Bethel Baptist Church in Fruitport.

Julius is survived by his son, Jim (Denise) Ackerman, son-in-law, Jay (Julie) Link; grandchildren, Craig (Lindsay) Ackerman and Peter (Emilia) Ackerman; great grandchildren, Jenna, Olivia, Mia and Caleb; sister, Catherine Glasen, sister-in-law, Verna (Marshall) Ackerman and brother-in-law, Jack White. Carl-Heinz Fischer of Germany, who lived in their home as an exchange student in 1969–70, visited many times since with his wife, Jutta and daughters, Christine and Julia, and remained close. Julius was preceded in death by his wife, Arlene, in 2013, daughter, Julie Link, in 2015, his parents, and brothers Roger, Robert and Marshall.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 17, 2018 at 1:00 PM at Faith Baptist Church, 616 W Lincoln Ave., Cheboygan, MI, with Pastor Paul Lamberson officiating. A luncheon will be provided following the service. A graveside service will be held in the spring at Coopersville Polkton Cemetery in Coopersville, MI.  In lieu of flowers, anyone wishing to make a memorial contribution is encouraged to consider Faith Baptist Church in Cheboygan, MI, PO Box 224, Cheboygan, MI 49721. Please include a note that your gift is in memory of Julius Ackerman.

  1. Jim,I pray that the Lord will comfort you and your family through these sad times. It always helps knowing that we will see our loved ones again someday when we are called home to be with our Savior.

  2. Jim, you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.
I know that your father is happy with the Lord as well as with your mother, Julie and the rest of the family.
